JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Ryhall's pride at shoot-out effort

RYHALL were edged out on penalties after a thrilling Grantham Youth League KO Cup semi-final.

They produced an outstanding performance and competed in all areas against superior opposition.

Chances were few and far between in the opening period, but Gonerby took the lead just before half-time when a deflected shot found the net.

This was a cruel blow because until then Ryhall just had the edge and were unfortunate on two previous occasions.

The third quarter proved vital and, after some slick passing, a super low drive from Jake Moseley found the far corner of the Gonerby net.

With the goal came belief and confidence, but the rest of the match became a midfield battle and both teams only created one more chance each.

Despite the shoot-out defeat, Ryhall can be proud of their achievements after a team performance which surpassed all others.

Ryhall: J Ireland, L Rolfe, L Storey, H Brown, J Cuff, D Johnson, J Marechel, H Peasgood, K Bonsall, J Moseley.

Deeping Blue U9 2 Netherton Falcons U9 1

RANGERS clinched second place in the Red Zone in their final Junior Alliance match of the season.

They were pipped to the title by Hampton Red who they face this weekend in the semi-final of the League Cup.

Needing victory on Saturday to secure a second successive runners-up spot, Deeping launched a series of attacks in the opening period.

Their attacking play was soon rewarded when Joe Hussey fired home to put Rangers 1-0 up and the Blues looked in control.

However, Netherton won a free-kick some 20 yards out and it was crashed home into the top corner of the Deeping goal.

The goal shook the Blues but they battled back and only a deflection stopped Ryan Cotterell from putting the home side back in front just before the interval.

Netherton started the second half with the advantage of the wind, but Rangers took the game to their opponents and created several great chances but couldn't find a second goal.

With just six minutes left, Deeping finally got the breakthrough as defensive rock Jack Baker moved forward and picked the ball up, ran past a couple of Netherton players and let fly from the edge of the box with the ball nestling in the back of the net.

Blues: Olly Goode, Thomas Needham, Josh Smith, Adam Reeve, Ryan Cotterell, Joe Hussey, Jack Baker, Jamie Scott.

Stamford U14 5 Netherton U14 1

STAMFORD got back to winning ways with a great display.

They took an early lead when Daniel Ede scored with a header from a corner.

The advantage was doubled when Adis Coulson scored from close range after good play from Sam Humphrey and Andre Petrossian.

After losing Kieran Arthur through injury, Stamford seemed to lose their shape and Netherton pulled a goal back before the break and began to cause problems.

Stamford changed things around for the second half and scored again when some excellent play down the right saw Ben Roberts' perfect cross headed in by Coulson.

David Jessop made it four with a good left-foot strike after some good link-up play with Daniel Szymanski.

Daniel De'Ath then split the Netherton defence with a great through ball and Jessop kept his cool in a one-on-one to finish in style.

Stamford: John Swales, Thomas Faulkner, Daniel Ede, Daniel De'Ath, Lewis McCullouch, Kieran Arthur, David Jessop, Adis Coulson, Sam Humphrey, Andre Petrossian, Daniel Szymanski, Ashley Neal, Ben Roberts.

Ketton U13 3 Harrowby U13 0

KETTON triumphed in the clash between the Grantham Youth League high-flyers.

They took early control and a clearance from Sam Hudson found Ash Townsend who crossed for Nicholas Mainstone to neatly head home.

Ketton continued to play some good football and Lewis Morley broke free to score their second.

The second half was much the same with Ketton on top and within a few minutes of the restart Morley got number three.

Ketton Tigers U11 1 Gonerby U11 1

KETTON dominated the majority of this Grantham Youth League match, but failed to convert a handful of great chances for the win that their good play deserved.

With everything seemingly going Ketton's way they fell behind when they failed to deal with Gonerby's first real attack and the ball was driven home.

Ketton picked up their game and Alfie Winters got in a good position but dragged a shot wide and a pile-driver from Liam Green failed to hit the target when it flattened a Gonerby defender.

The hosts equaliser came from a throw that James Anderson flicked on to Kieran Young whose snap-shot flew into the net.

Ketton created a number of goalscoring opportunities in the second half with Winters, Young, Anderson and Sven Hart all going close to grabbing a winner.

The draw leaves Ketton in fourth place but with games in hand to catch up on league leaders Colsterworth who are nine points clear having played three more matches.

Ketton: K Chaffe, W Germany, B Shepard, G Germany, A Henry, K Young, L Green, J Anderson, S Hart, A Winters, J Stocker. Subs: L Moy, W Miles, D Lewis.

Man-of-the-match: Kieran Young.

PSV U11 0 Deeping U11 2

DEEPING kept their second clean sheet of the season but were made to work for their victory against a physical PSV side.

A goalless first half was a fair reflection of the two team's performances with PSV just edging the game and looking to capitalise on Deeping mistakes.

With 10 minutes to go and neither team looking to finish the victor, coach Dave Dorward brought on James Morten for the exhausted George Hick who had run himself ragged in attack.

The team seemed to be lifted by the changes and soon began to make the late pressure count.

A long ball cleared from defence was controlled by Jack Baxter to William Greenwood who placed an excellent pass for Baxter to control, compose himself and then unleash a great shot into the far corner of the net.

With their heads up, Ryan Wilkinson's tenacity and persistence paid off when he chased down a loose ball on the left and managed to break free of the two or three players surrounding him.

A neat piece of play allowed him to beat the offside trap and he smartly finished the move with a well-taken and well-deserved goal to put the game beyond PSV.

Deeping: Callum Ward-Jones, Jason Lythgoe, Jacob Parker, James Dorward, Zac Allen, Rhys Young, James Morten, William Greenwood, Patrick Brown, George Hick, Joshua Cameron, Jack Baxter, Ryan Wilkinson.

Deeping U12 3 Hampton U12 1

DEEPING earned all three points from a competitive clash against a well-organised Hampton outfit.

Jamie Sharpe scored the opening goal after eight minutes for Deeping as William Knight created the chance by winning the ball and providing a great cross for Sharpe to fire a left-foot drive in off the post.

Knight then produced a touch of class for Deeping when he received the ball to unleash a 35-yard effort that was dipping as it made its way into the far corner of the net.

David Stevenette, who re-appeared at the start of the second half for Deeping after rubbing off a knock in the opening period, then played a great ball into Owen Skinner to score a well-taken goal which he deserved for his overall play.

Hampton responded and only some fine saves from Deeping keeper Mark Grundy kept them at bay, although they did sneak a consolation towards the end of the match.

Jason Chatman, Deeping coach, said: "Once again we were strong in the first half but sat back after taking a well-deserved lead.

"The second half was more even and all the boys had to get stuck in.

"I was disappointed to concede a soft goal as we tell the boys we always go out for clean sheets."

Deeping: Mark Grundy, Ben Aspinall, David Stevenette, Thomas Palmer, Liam Reeve, Owen Skinner, Jamie Sharpe, William Knight, Jake Brown, Luke Parsons, Jordan Watson. Sub: George Venables.

Man-of-the-match: Owen Skinner.

Ketton U12 5 Aslockton U12 3

KETTON bounced back from their cup semi-final defeat with a fine Grantham Youth League victory over a spirited Aslockton side.

Thomas Mann scored a fine individual goal and was then instrumental in the next two as Jordan Goodwin reacted well to a rebound off the visiting keeper and then Jacob Howe rose superbly to head home an inswinging corner from Mann.

However, the 3-0 lead was soon blown away as the visitors scored three similar goals to go in level at the break.

After a few wise words at the break from their manager, Ketton regrouped and their hard graft was rewarded with two fine strikes to clinch the match.

Firstly Luke Bagley found the top corner from the edge of the area and late on captain Jack Truscott added the fifth as he beat two defenders and smashed home to seal a fine victory.

Man-of-the-match: Lewis Frost.
