MARKET Overton were missing at least seven regular first team players on Sunday due to county cup commitments for their Saturday clubs and were made to suffer by an attack-minded Wisbech side.
Wisbech batted first and got off to a flyer with 80 off 13 overs and that set the pace for their entire innings which ended on 335 for 2 off 45 overs, with two of their batsmen scoring tons.
Due to the enormity of the task facing Marko’s batsmen, captain Mark Hudson decided to mix up the batting order and Ryan Thwaites showed what he is capable of with a quickfire 31.
He was supported by some good stroke play from Adam Clark who top scored with 32 but the innings fizzled out at 131 in just 24 overs.
Skipper Hudson said: “With pretty much a full squad to choose from for the Oakham clash (this Sunday), I expect a much different performance.”
Marko can take some confidence into the weekend’s only Rutland derby in the Rutland League. Oakham’s form has been hit and miss.
Oakham were beaten at Kings Keys last weekend posting just 155-8 as they lost by four wickets. They will need to score far more at the Lime Kilns where, if Marko’s top batsmen settle, it could be a difficult day for Oakham’s bowlers.
Oakham’s 1st XI travel to Lutterworth in the Leicestershire League on Saturday.
