Cambridge Nomads 2nds 4 Rutland 2nds 1
RUTLAND 2nd XI will have to wait another year to emulate the first team and win promotion into the higher echelons of the East League.
Playing in the 3NW division, alongside Rutland 1sts, the seconds’ saw their promotion hopes snuffed out by a good Cambridge Nomads side on Saturday.
Rutland began slowly as they struggled to adapt to the pace of a very sandy pitch and the home side soon forced a short corner which they dispatched in to the roof of the Rutland net with an excellent drag flick.
The early set back was not enough to spark Rutland into life and the defence and goalkeeper Ben Chew were forced in into a number of last gasp clearances.
Nomads’ pacy forwards were asking questions of Rutland and with 10 minutes until half time they scored a second goal.
This was the catalyst for some better play from Rutland and they began to pass the ball with more assurance and they came tearing out of the blocks after half time.
Rutland forced a short corner of their own which Richard Jennings struck sweetly and saw deflected in off a defender’s stick.
Rutland sensed they had a foothold and poured forward, creating good chances but Nomads rode their luck and with 10 minutes left took advantage of an overturned umpiring decision and scored as the Rutland defence dawdled.
This third goal broke Rutland’s resistance and a fourth soon followed from a wonderful piece of opportunism from the centre forward as he deflected the ball behind him past a startled and helpless Chew.
Rutland ended the game disappointed but must be proud of their first season in division 3 with third place still to fight for in the remaining two games.
