A dour opener to league series

CEDAR Lake at Decoy was in a dour mood last Sunday when Deeping St James AC fished the first round match of this year’s South Holland League Series.

Less than 40lbs was needed to win this one with at least five of the competitors returning a weight in single figures.

Drawn end peg number 26 and facing a cold head wind, series organiser Ray Gregory settled for a maggot in the margins approach, baiting with double reds over loose fed caster to record his winning weight of 36lb 10oz, barbel of 3lb plus numbered amongst his catch.

Second place went to Graeme Foster at peg 23, a similar mix of barbel and carp making up his weight of 33lb 13oz. Andy Wilson taking the final placing with 32lb 5oz.

The six match Series, fished on a points basis with nine anglers going through to the final in June, is an annual open event fished by anglers from clubs in the South Holland area with Deeping St James and Spalding clubs providing the majority of competitors. The next round will be the new lake at Gedney Hill Fisheries on Sunday, April 3.

The top five places and points after this first round are: Ray Gregory (10) Graeme Foster (9) Andy Wilson (8) Derek Wilson (7) Alan Thomas (6) Mick Wright (5).

l FATHER and son pair Adi and Vic Naylor took the top two places when Uppingham Angling Society fished at Tugby Lake on Sunday.

Both used a cage feeder with red maggot to lure mostly bream catches. Adi’s winning weight was 27lb 2oz with Vic netting 19lb 4oz.
