Oakham’s over 60s team have won their first match of the summer season, beating Oadby 7-1 in the Leicestershire Tennis League.
Edmund Dry and Gordon Reekie, who are due to play for Leicestershire’s over 65s team this week, took on Oadby’s 2nd first of all and they proved to be a very handy pair.
The Rutlanders won the 1st set then relaxed and were made to pay for it as the Oadby pair pressed for a ‘professional tie-break’ decider. It was touch and go until Oakham broke through to take it 10-6. They won their next rubber with greater ease.
Ken Stuart and Charles Henley kept ahead from the start, beating the visitors’ 1st pair 7-5, 6-4. They found the second rubber much easier as one of the visitors had pulled a muscle in their opening match.
Non-playing Captain, Gordon Smith was delighted with Oakham’s excellent first match. Their next match is at Ashby Castle.
l The majority of Oakham’s league fixtures begin on April 30 with two ladies teams, two mens teams and mixed side. There are also veterans teams for men and women over 45, and series of age-groups for juniors to play.
