A Rutland basketball team won gold at a Special Olympics East Midlands Regional Basketball Tournament at Loughborough University recently.

The Conquerors are all part of the Rutland Supported Basketball Club and they won division two, beating St Albans, North Staffordshire B and Leicester Desford Demons B by wide margins.

Their medals were presented by a member of Leicester Riders basketball team.

Club spokesman Debbie Sowter said: “It was a
fantastic day for players and spectators.

“Each of our 12 players got the opportunity to play at competition level, and the supporters got the chance to watch some exciting basketball.

“It really was a nail biting, adrenaline packed experience.”

She added: “As with events of this kind there are always emotional moments but none more so than when Matthew Vanne, who has very little vision, managed to score a basket after being fed the ball by Chris Southwell.

“It’s what Special Olympic sport is all about.”
