High speed racer Arnie Shelton beat the series leader to cut the gap at the top to 25 points - just one victory - at Brands Hatch on Sunday.
The Motostar 125cc rider beat current number one, Tom Carne, to move within striking distance with six rounds remaining.
Neither rider had completed the previous round, at Snetterton, due to technical and tire issues but on Sunday they raced neck-to-neck with the Haconby rider eventually getting the better of his arch rival.
Top on the day was Bradley Ray, 15 seconds ahead of the chasing pack, but as he is an occasional racer in the series the battle for second was more important for season’s standings - and in that private battle, Shelton beat Carne by 0.096 of a second.
It was the first time this year that Shelton has beaten Carne and the Haconby racer admitted: “It had started to get to me. But now I have beaten him it’s a confidence boost for me and a blow for him.”
Shelton, who began the race on the third row of the grid, said: “I was 10th in qualifying which was disappointing but I usually go better in the race itself.
“Tom was high on the grid but I got a reasonable start and overtook a few of the 125cc bikes quite quickly.
“I got my head down and caught him, then we had some overtaking.”
After catching his rival on the 8th lap, Shelton finally secured second spot, pushing Carne to third on the 12th and final lap.
The next round is on August 11 at Oulton Park.
