Bourne Wheelers’ teenagers Maddie Gammons and Tim James flew the flag for the cycling club at the first round of the National Trophy cyclo-cross series at Shrewsbury at the weekend.
Both raced exceptionally well with Tim James getting the best result with a fine 5th place in the junior boys category, to match his best ever finish at a national level race.
However it was 14 year old Gammons who had the most eye catching performance. With just over a lap to go the Bourne schoolgirl was lying in second place, just behind the leader and closing, when disaster struck her as a mechanical forced her to run for nearly half a mile as her bike became unrideable with a broken rear mech.
Despite the mishap, Maddie dug really deep and finally came home in 11th place.
However with form like this, it is impossible to see the talented youth not placing consistently on the podium this season.
The rest of the clubs cross riders had a weekend off last week, but all should be out in force for the 4th round of the Lincs League at Stroxton, near Grantham on Sunday
