Bourne Tennis Club’s Junior team are condemned to relegation after a narrow defeat against second-placed Deeping B.

They turned in their strongest performance yet, only falling short at the final hurdle to lose 5-4 for the fifth time this season.

Will Palmer and Tom Cooke had Bourne off to a flying start with an 8-5 victory Alex Yung and Tom Hill slipped from 6-2 up with set point to lose 6-7 (5-7).

Matt Hassall and Ed Nation did the opposite, recovering from 4-2 down against Deeping’s first pair to 7-6 and put Bourne in front.

The match ebbed and flowed to a final deciding rubber with Matt and Ed securing an early break before lost five games in a row. Although they recovered two breaks of serve, their fightback fell one game short in a 6-7 loss that condemned Bourne, after four successive promotions, to their first relegation in the Peterborough and District Tennis League.
