STAMFORD High School’s first team have had a great week with a victory over Oakham, two strong appearances in regional tournaments and county selections for two students.

The first XI, captained by Aimee Blay, held off Oakham to secure a 2-1 victory at home and then travelled to Bedford to represent Lincolnshire at the regional tournament where they finished sixth.

In a challenging group alongside Felsted, Sevenoaks and Bedford Modern, Blay, Rachel Richardson and Vicky Salt used their experience to lead the younger players with some outstanding stick work.

The defensive back line of Louise Thomson, Katherine Gibbons, Jo Crombie and Connie Wallwork were solid in denying some well-drilled teams the opportunity to convert their chances in a series of close games.

The U14 team also took part in a regional tournament, competing at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.

The girls worked hard to produce some fantastic hockey against strong opposition including Greshams, Bedford Girls and Wymondham, to ultimately finish in a well-deserved fifth.

To cap off a great week, two talented players have been selected for the U16 Leicestershire county squad.

Charlie Spice and Issy Chandler, both in year 10, have represented the school squad since they joined the High School in year 7 and have developed through the ranks to shine on the county stage.

The girls competed in their first match for Leicestershire on Thursday evening drawing 0-0 with Loughborough.

Charlie and Issy both said they were thrilled and proud to receive the county call up.
