RUTLAND Rockets rounded off a superb first season by taking first and second place at the Great Dalby High 5 Tournament earlier this month.

The Rockets entered two teams (blacks and reds) against teams from Swallowdale, Great Dalby and Captain’s Close clubs and they stole the show with several excellent performances.

Rutland Black beat Great Dalby and Captain’s Close, and drew with Swallowdale, and Rutland Reds were undefeated.

The title decider between the two Rutland teams was end-to-end with the black team leading at half time but the Reds coming back to win 5-4.

Coach Sam Griffin said: “Both teams played amazing netball throughout the day.”

The club wrapped up their league season in May with two teams making their debut in the Leicester Netball Youth League - Rutland Rockets 1 in division 1 and Rutland Rockets 2 in division 2.

Both teams have had very successful first seasons. The first team were runners-up in division 1 and the second team finished third in division 2.

The girls’ coach added: “Both teams had a win against every team in their division which is a massive achievement. It has been a fantastic first season.”

The Rockets began their Leicester Summer Netball League campaign with a massive 52-17 victory against Grasshoppers.

The team settled quickly to the pace of the game and kept up a high-energy display through to the end.

Coach Griffin added: “The confidence shone from the junior girls as they all played a valuable part in the team, standing up to their older opponent’s.

“The girls are now keeping up with their new experienced team mates who are helping to bring the best out of them.
