DEEPING and Yaxley angling clubs went head to head on Raveley drain for the return match of the Newman Cup at the weekend.
Hopes were high for big weights of small fish. Unfortunately the fish were very tightly packed and difficult to catch in the match section, while pleasure anglers had much more success downstream of the sluice.
Leading the way home for Deeping was Andy Wilson, fishing a long pole tight to the far bank. Andy caught roach, rudd and skimmers on pinkie for 2lb 4oz, just missing out on top honours. Three pegs away was Mel Saggers (Yaxley), who also fished the long pole, combined with a pinkie hookbait for 2lb 3oz. Third and fourth places were both to the left of Wilson, as Brian Warren (Yaxley) caught 1lb 9 1/2oz and Mark Hawsley, who opted for the whip, to put 1lb 7 1/2oz on the scales.
Team honours over the two legs went to Yaxley with 70lb 13 1/2oz beating Deeping’s 66lb 13 1/2oz.
l THE sixth and final round of the DILS league was incorporated into this match with Andy Wilson winner on the day, claiming a few valuable points to finish as joint runner-up alongside Stuart Redman. Both ended on 39 points while overall winner Mark Hawsley put in another solid performance (1lb 7oz made up of 210 fry) to win the league with 41 points.
The club will fish the River Glen at West Pinchbeck for the Non Cup Winners Cup on Sunday. Draw time is 9am and angling will run from 10am until 3pm. To book a place call Andy Wilson on 07787 352762.
