FOR the first time in the club’s 20-year history, two Stamford indoor bowlers have reached the final stages of the English Indoor Bowling Association Pairs championship.
Adam Warrington and Martyn Dolby secured their place with a dramatic 23-19 defeat of Matt Wyers and his international skipper, Graham Smith from Spalding in the Area final on Saturday.
From the outset the Stamford pair out-drew their opposite numbers and by the half way stage had opened up a 10-shot lead. However, Smith showed some of his England class to claw back the deficit to within three shots as they reached the 21st and final end. But with Dolby and Warrington holding shots he was unable to rescue the match leaving a delighted Stamford pair looking forward to one of their greatest challenges.
Dolby said: “It was one of our best performances. And I’m particularly pleased to have helped Adam reach his first National Indoor Finals – something he richly deserves.”
The finals will be held at Nottingham in April.
Dolby also skipped Bob Warters in the final stages of the National Over 60s Pairs at Melton. They won their opening game against Barwell 24-5 but missed out on a quarter-final place after being beaten 9-29 by a strong duo from York IBC.
In the Northants Federation Triples, Stamford are guaranteed a final place on March 18, with Dolby, Warrington and Paul Bailey set to play Mike Ramsden, Mal Cullingworth and Keith Rippin in the semi-finals.
There are also semi-final places for Ramsden in the Over 65 singles against Mick Linnel following victory over fellow clubmate Doug Want.
The juniors acquitted themselves well in the county singles finals with Katie Bailey beating her brother Jon but just missing out on a semi-final place. Stephen Harris also won two of his three singles.
