IN a dramatic finish to their Lincolnshire League Division Three clash at Sleaford, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club’s men’s B team scraped home by the thickness of a scorecard with the last bowl of the match.
The home team looked to have levelled the scores when their skip removed two Stamford bowls with his final delivery but the resourceful Len Layborne used his last bowl to edge its way into the head and claim the vital shot on a measure.
As a result, Stamford won by two shots and claimed a vital 12 of the 18 points available.
The club’s mixed team made up for a disappointing defeat at Dunholme last week with 14 points at bottom of the table Louth, bolstered by a confidence-boosting win by June Brennan, Anita Edwards, Dave Hudson and John Little, claiming a 19-12 victory. There were also wins by rinks skipped by Peter Banks and Martyn Dolby.
The Northants Bowling Federation events are gaining momentum with Peter and Glenys Edwards reaching the quarter-finals of the pairs against England international Pat Reynolds and her husband Stuart by 19-13. They now meet Langtoft’s Richard and Maureen Montgomerie who beat fellow Stamford bowlers Connie Cox and Albert Horton 22-9.
Doug and Jan Want have also reached the same stage with a last end, 17-16 defeat of one of the competition favourites, Cliff Watson and Liz Agxt.
Former national and county winners Montgomerie and Dolby lost to the holders Trisram Morton and James Harford at Peterborough but in the women’s pairs Maureen Montgomerie and Connie Cox reached the semi-final with a defeat of the pairing of Joan Robinson and Doris Flowers.
Other winners in the Over 65 men’s singles include Want, Dave Hudson and Derek King.
