TWO girls from Vale Judo Club have been selected for the England Judo Squad after a string of good results at recent ranking tournaments.
Clemence Barnes, 12, will join the Pre-Cadet Squad and Holly Newton, 14, has regained her place in the England set-up, moving into the Cadet Squad.
The girls will benefit from extra training and be eligible for selection for international events and training camps in 2011-12.
Meanwhile 18 competitors and supporters from the Oakham-based club travelled to Sweden to take part in a competition and training camp at Molkon JK last weekend.
The team displayed some terrific judo and won six medals. Winners were Megan Rowley (gold, U13 44kg), Sofia Palmer (bronze, U13 44kg), Ben Buckby (gold, U13 30kg and bronze, U13 U34kg), Holly Newton (silver, U15 U57kg), Elrik Starbuck (silver, U20 U66kg).
l VALE Judo has won Sportivate funding to subsidise separate men’s and women’s beginners courses which will start in January.
The courses are designed to introduce participants (aged 14 or older) to a range of judo techniques and anyone taking part in the six-eight week course will be able to complete their first judo grading. They may then chose to join a range of technique only or competitive regular judo classes.
The club which has been awarded the Sport England Gold Club Mark award has more than 200 members from the age of five. For more information visit www.valejudo.org.uk, e-mail email@example.com or call 01572 813531.
