Burghley Park Golf Club’s Captains’ Weekend enjoyed its highest ever turnout at the weekend.

In total 254 players took part, with 179 men on Sunday and 75 ladies on Saturday.

Club captain Richard Gilbert thanked everyone for their support. He said: “I’m delighted by the support which ladies’ captain Janet Duff and myself have received from club members over the weekend, and for their great generosity.

“Their donations to our Captains’ Charities (Mencap, and Thorpe Hall Hospice) came to over £1,400, and the atmosphere on the course and in the clubhouse was fantastic.”

* Saturday was Ladies’ Day, and all the players threw themselves enthusiastically into the flower power theme.

Scores were impressive, with victory going to Beryl Burrows, Lynn Collen & Mary Dooley, whose 86 points pipped Pam Barton, Pauline Crampin & Becky Ferguson by a single point. Sue Churchill, Hannah Vaughan & Jo Bell claimed third with 82.

The best front nine prize (44) went to Pippa Lesage, Barbara Newell & Anne Fensom, and the best back nine prize (40) to Helen Robinson, Mel Griffiths & Pip Beeke. Longest drive went to Hannah Vaughan, straightest drive to Shirley Caruth, nearest the pins to Anne Ramamoorthy and Pat Harris, and nearest the flower to Eileen Smith.

* The juniors competition saw a memorable day for the Mayman family. Brothers Adam and Jordan Mayman took the first two places on 38, with Adam winning on countback. Ada also got a hole-in-one on the 16th,

On Sunday, the final positions were decided on countback, with Anton Wells better back nine giving him victory and the captains prize with 41, shading out Jim McGhee in second. Darron Russon took third on 40, on countback from Adrian Crowson in fourth , with David Scott fifth on 39, and Robin Nixon sixth on 39.

Derek Clarke holed in one on the 13th to secure his first ever ace. Nearest the pin prizes went to John Mayman (3rd), Mike Beaumont (9th) and Chris Quinn (16th), with Darron Russon increasing his prize take by winning the straightest drive competition.

* Joe Lippett, the assistant pro at Burghley, claimed his first win as a professional on Monday, in the Lincolnshire PGA Assistant Pro’s championship at Kenwick Park. After a steady morning round of 77, Lippett caught fire in the afternoon session to card a 68 and take the title by two shots.

* Burghley’s A team travelled to Gedney Hill on Saturday in the South Lincs League and suffered a narrow defeat, going down 3½ - 2½. With three matches to go, Burghley sit jointly at the top of the table with Blankney, and need to keep winning to be sure of an immediate return to the top flight.
