RUTLAND County’s interest in the Leicestershire and Rutland Mixed Foursomes has come to an end as they bowed out against Scraptoft by just one point in the semi-final at Whetstone.

In a tense and exciting match, Chris Palmer and Suzanne Huxley won 1-up but it was not enough win to overturn a 2-down loss from Andy Vernon and Imogen Huxley in the opening match.

l CLUB Champion Michael Pressick is on the road having just played in the Midland Amateur Open and, despite shooting a 74 at St Ives GC and a disappointing 77 at Brampton Heath, he is still optimistic about the remainder of the season.

The 17-year-old is preparing for the Nick Faldo U21 Series Open to be staged at Hollinwell Golf Club, north of Nottingham.

l COUNTY’S C team secured an honourable 3-3 home draw against a tight-knit Belton Park outfit - led by Tony Davies, who still hasn’t managed a win against County’s captain Dave Rippin this season.

The home skipper was partnered to a half by Graham Cole. Gerry McIntyre and Pete Maksymiw won 2&1, Kev Moxham and Ollie Huxley won 5&4, Cliff Knapp and Steve Lowe lost 2&1, Martyn Gatehouse and Dick Crosbie halved, Barry Cheshire and Chris Palmer lost 2&1.

l COUNTY’S seniors played a 1-2-3 with 33 players on the course.

Scores covered a large range from the winners fine 85 points down to a lowly 58. The winning trio led by a vice captain’s display of 43 points, was John Phipps, John Rudin and Keith Barratt with 85 points.

They were closely followed by the team of Arthur Dethick, Ray Taylor and Bill Ansell with a score of 84. This was led in with a fine 41 points by Bill.

Stewart picton beat Arthur Dethick in the Singles Knockout Semi-final, winning on the 18th. He now awaits the winner of Barry Cheshire and Dick Wray in the Final.

There was no seniors’ club competition this week so members played an Individual Stableford, although turnout was reduced due to a club match against Toft.

Scores were poor in the Stableford except for the winner, Gill Glenister who returned 43 points. Next up was Frank Copsey who took second on countback from Keith Barratt with 38 points.

Rutland County Seniors were beaten 6½-1½ at Toft.

Results (Rutland County names): John Phipps & Terry Loomes lost 3&2; Ted Leighton & Alan Garner halved; Rob Elliott & John Rudin lost 3&2; Dick Wray & John Chatburn lost 2 down; John Mason & Arthur Dethick won 4&3; Mike Platt & Roy Armitage lost 4&2; Ray Taylor & David Whitehead lost 1 down; Nigel Coombs & Andrew Moore lost 6&5.
