THE top trio had to be separated on countback after an incredibly tight fundraising Stableford competition at Greetham Valley.
Geoff Williams, Graham Smith and Dave Thompson all scored 38 in tough conditions with 11-handicapper Geoff taking first place thanks to a better final three holes. Graham, playing off five recovered to finish second after hitting his ball into the water on the par three 14th. Third-placed Dave also plays off five.
Former captain Eve Mills won the ladies competition with a spirited 37 - despite not scoring on the second and 13th holes.
Eve, off 16, was delighted with the way that she coped in the wind, finishing well ahead of a group of four players on 32. Fay Taylor took second, Chris Edwards third, with Sue Ker and Gillian Upton pushed back to fourth and fifth on countback.
The matches were in aid of the club captains’ charity, the Evergreen Care Trust.
* GREETHAM Seniors Captain Peter Macdonald Pearce held his away day at Beeston Fields, Nottingham, this week where players were frequently caught out by the slickness of the greens and hidden slopes.
Last year’s winner of the Joe Ball Bowl, David Aldred, coped better than most, winning with a score of 33 points.
David Lucas was second after getting to grips with the back nine to finish with 31. He also won the longest drive and nearest the pin competitions. Joe Ball was third with 30 points with 72 the winning score for the top team of Peter Macdonald Pearce, Martin Hope and David Aldred.
Peter thanked the former captains for their support with a special mention to Cclub secretary Dennis Millington, who was a special guest on the day, for his considerable help this year.
