ANGLERS have enjoyed an excellent start to the season at Rutland Water with a rod average of 6.08 on the opening day.
Fish were taken in most areas with a number of over wintered fish showing.
The best fish recorded on opening day fell to Stowmarket angler Allen Hardy, who netted a superb 7lb 6oz brown while boat fishing the South Arm. The fish fell to a green nymph on a sinking line.
Rutland Water senior warden John Seaton presented Allen with the Independence Day Trophy and Anglian Water gift vouchers.
Other anglers in contention for the prize for best opening day fish were Andy Williamson with a 6lb 1oz rainbow, taken on a floating line and diawl bach, and Uppingham’s Ken Merriden with a 5lb 5½oz brown. Both of these fish were caught in the South Arm.
l THE superb start to the season at Eyebrook continues with a total of 754 rods now accounting for 3,068 fish – a rod average of 4.06.
Eyebrook regulars, Arthur Cullingworth and Andy Gallagher both enjoyed frenetic boat sport at the Stoke Dry end; both taking bag limits on an assortment of black, brown and green buzzers. Dave Buxton fished the shallows at Stoke Dry and took his bag limit of 20lb 2oz on a footballer buzzer.
Bank fishing has been superb with many bag limits of trout taken from all points of the fishery,
Oakham’s John Dracup took five rainbows from the old road opposite Stoke Dry on buzzers.
