GYMNASTICS: Schoolgirls claim medals on debut

GYMNASTS from a school in Oakham returned with a haul of silver and bronze medals from the Midlands Independent Schools Gymnastic Association Championships.

Youngsters from Brooke Priory School competed in Birmingham at the end of May and performed extremely well in their first competition at this level.

The U9 novice team of Lea Swanick, 8, Hattie Ramsay, 7, Grace Beadsley, 8, Alice Whyman, 7, Gabi Gelderbloom, 7 and Sam Barnes, 8, came third, while the U11 novice team of Eve Davies, 10, Sophia Moore 10, Taryn Lee, 10, front, Clare Maitland, 10, Zoe Onyett, 11, Josephine White, 9 took second spot in their event.

Clare Maitland took individual fourth place overall, and coach Nicki Cashman was delighted with the teams’ displays.

She said: “I was very proud of how the girls performed.

“It was their first big event and they showed great potential for the future.”
