Rutland Ladies 3 Cambridge South 1

RUTLAND played back-to-back matches over the weekend, first beating Cambridge South and then sharing the spoils with the city’s university side.

In the first of their matches Katie Richardson deflected the ball for her third goal in a fortnight within the first couple of minutes. But as the game developed, both teams struggled to retain possession.

As one counter attack followed another, Rutland were grateful to the defensive cover of Maria Barefoot and Sarah Sissins and the goalkeeping of Charlotte Brooks to keep Cambridge at bay.

At the other end, youngsters Lucy Ginn and Zoe Wilson caused problems with their pace and good link-up play between the pair led to Wilson scoring through the keeper’s legs.

The Rutland girls held a 2-0 lead at half time but were aware that their opponents had improved throughout the first half. And after Aimee Blay and Rachel Richardson repelled four short corners, Cambridge scored from the fifth, soon after the restart.

As tiredness began to set in towards the end, spaces appeared between attack and defence but Rutland did secure their win a late goal from Ellie Ricketts.

Rutland Ladies 1

Cambridge University 3rd 1

THE Ladies faced horrendous weather during their second match of the weekend and the conditions clearly affected the quality of hockey played.

Despite this, there were some good performances in the first half. Molly Atkinson showed great skill in the inside right channel, and Kate Stubbs at full back saved Rutland at the back as the University side pressed.

It was all square at half time, but Cambridge scored the goal which had been coming midway through the second period. In response, Rutland reshuffled, shifting several players and overloading the right hand side. Katie Richardson and Ellie Ricketts found more space up front and Rutland started to string moves together.

They left their best move of the game until the last 30 seconds when a break down the right led to a short corner. With all the Rutland outfield players around the circle for the last play of the game, Cambridge could not clear and Ricketts fired the ball home to salvage a draw.

l RUTLAND Men’s 2nd XI’s woes continued with a 4-1 defeat to a limited Cambridge City side.

A predatory finish from the hamstrung Brian Hemmings and some lithe goalkeeping from Ollie Carrick were Rutland’s only highlights.

The 3rd XI’s future looks bleak for this season after conceding their match against Bourne Deeping Dragons.
