Junior angler leads the field to win bank match

Junior angler Graham Hayward from Empingham won the Rutland Water Fly Fishers John Wadham Bank Match, taking a winning limit from the dam.

Using buzzers under the bung, Graham also took the prize for the best fish of the match, a chunky 3lb 14oz rainbow. Runner-up Steve Crowder caught his limit from Yellowstone with an orange booby on a slow sinking line.

Results: 1st Graham Hayward 8 fish, 21lb 12oz; 2nd Steve Crowder 8 fish, 20lb 10oz; 3rd Peter Gover 6 fish, 13lb 15oz.

The John Wadham Bank Match coincided with the Bob Church Classic when a field of 95 enjoyed a great day’s fishing with a staggering rod average of 11.12.

Leigh Pond recorded the biggest fish on the day at 4lb 14oz among a winning bag weight (including time bonus) of 47lb 13¾oz. Joan Russell was top lady rod with 32lb 13 ⅞oz.

Results: 1st Leigh Pond, 47lb 13¾oz; 2nd Al Owen 43lb 1oz; 3rd Alec Bowler 40lb 9¾oz; 4th Peter Appleby 40lb 9 1/8oz; 5th Iain Barr 40lb 6½oz.

l Anglers competing in Sunday’s Vision Pairs match also enjoyed a terrific rod average, with 39 pairs averaging 7.40.

Benny Poffe took the best fish at 7lb 1oz and Martin Watson the best bag at 36lb ½oz. Joan Russell was top lady angler with a 22lb 14 ⅞oz bag.

Results: 1st Mike Gunnell & David Lang 61lb 14 3/8oz; 2nd Colin Bradley & Martin Watson 57lb 8 3/8oz; 3rd Ashley Davies & Tom Davies 56lb 12 1/8oz; 4th John Hardy & Dick Turpin 56lb 2½oz; 5th Mark Macleod & Graham Willis 55lb 13 3/8oz.

l Chris Evans won week two of Rutland Water’s Tuesday Night Boat league.

Despite torrential rain and freezing temperatures, 49 fish were caught in less than three hours of fishing.

Evans’ winning bag of eight fish weighed 19lb 11½ oz. He fished in a few places but came across most fish by drifting either side of Normanton Church.

The best fish of the night fell to last week’s winner Keith Jones with a superb 6lb ½oz rainbow. His five fish weighed 17lb 6oz.

Week two results: 1st Chris Evans 8 fish for 19lb 11 ½oz; 2nd Richard Cooper 8 for 18lb 2oz; 3rd Graham Hayward 8 for 17lb 11 ½oz.

l The reservoir’s best fish of the week fell to visiting angler, David Hagger from Middlesborough, who caught a superb overwintered rainbow weighing in at 7lb 5oz.
