Rutland Ladies 11

Cambridge South 1

ONCE Rutland Ladies got going against Cambridge on Saturday they were ruthless.

Rutland began slowly and Cambridge did well to absorb the early pressure until Ellie Ricketts opened the scoring from a short corner.

Coach Simon Cooper spotted a weakness in Cambridge’s defence which right wing Harriet Crennell quickly exploited, creating several goalscoring opportunities. Two of these were converted by Ricketts and Sam Davies after good build-up play which started at the back with Kim Cooil.

Cambridge threatened on the break and Aimee Blay had to rescue Rutland a few times but eventually the city side did make a breakthrough. Lorena Tamos Laudo, on her debut, saved the initial shot with her chest but Cambridge scored from the rebound.

In response, Rutland upped the pressure and continued to score. Goals from Anne Pollock, Sam Davies and Ellie Ricketts ensured the match was well won.

Rutland: Lorena Tamos Laudo, Kim Cooil, Aimee Blay, Zoe Farmer, Katie Richardson, Sarah Sissins, Rachel Richardson, Ellie Ricketts, Anne Pollock, Sam Davies, Harriet Crennell.

Rutland Boys U16 6

Spalding Boys U16 0

RUTLAND Boys U16s comfortably beat Spalding in the third round of the National Youth Plate competition.

Rutland immediately took control with incisive moves into the Spalding D.

Steven Palmer showed what a promising player he is, carving through the Spalding defence time and time again and within no time he’d set up Tom Wilson for the opener.

It could have been a rout but the Spalding goalkeeper pulled off some outstanding saves to deny Rutland until Palmer set Oscar Bennison in to put Rutland 2-0 up.

Spalding fought hard in the second half but captain James Young was imperious, denying Spalding chances before taking the ball deep into the Spalding half.

It took time for Rutland to add to their tally but finally Jack Bishop put Bennison in to score another two and put the game beyond Spalding.

The result was sealed by a superb strike from Harry Butchart and another for goal machine Oscar Bennison.

Rutland: Luke Hardy, James Young, Hamish Reid, James Meadows, Joseph Chedd, Harrison Ginn, Steven Palmer, Louis Bowden, Jack Bishop, Harry Butchart, Oscar Bennison; Tom Wilson; Robert Forster.
