Ladies bow out of cup

Newmarket 3 Rutland Ladies 1

RUTLAND Ladies returned to action after the Christmas break with a cup match against the runaway league leaders, Newmarket.

The opening few minutes saw some end to end attacks but with both defences strong most of the first half remained goalless.

Rachel Richardson ensured that none of Newmarket’s short corners made it past the first defender, while at the other end some excellent goalkeeping prevented Annie Chan and Jess Anand from scoring .

Rutland faded towards the end of the half and Newmarket gained the upper hand and opened the scoring.

Rutland came out fighting in the second half but despite several short corners and a penalty stroke Rutland could not equalise before a more clinical Newmarket extended their lead on a counter attack.

After the restart Kim Cooil drove from the centre of defence to the opposition circle, setting up Jennifer Pollock to score a goal for Rutland and a potential Rutland come back.

Despite Charlotte Brooks, pulling off some excellent saves to keep Rutland in the game Newmarket eventually scored again to finish off the match.

Rutland return to league action on Saturday and are hopeful that they can still push for promotion.

Rutland: Charlotte Brooks, Katie Richardson, Kim Cooil, Ellie Ricketts, Anne Pollock, Sarah Sissins, Dom Lammie, Rachel Richardson, Hatty Reilly, Harriet Crennel, Hannah Paish, Jen Pollock, Jess Anand, Annie Chan.
