The annual Captain’s Charity Invitation at North Luffenham Golf Club, organised by Ken Jones, was a great success with more than £400 raised for the Sue Ryder Hospice.

Forty players took part in a fourball Stableford with Don Lambert leading the way with a magnificent 41. He was rewarded with a crystal decanter and a two-shot cut to his handicap.

John Hastings was second, pipping Mark Branson on countback. Both finished with 38 points.

Doreen Bilsdon won the 
ladies section with 32 points, followed by Carol Cassapi, on 30, in second.

Winners of the team event were John Everitt, Alan Everitt, Dave Flynn and John Hastings with 89 points.

l The men’s teams’ unbeaten record ended when the club’s seniors lost 1½-4½ at Stoke Albany.

The only real success on the day was captain Malcolm Hird’s round of net 65.

Results: Malcolm Hird and Chris Lee won 6&4, Stan Smith and John Nicholls lost 3&1, Ken Jones and Alan Barwell lost 7&6, Alan Swindley and John Everitt lost 4&3, Don Lambert and Graham Dexter halved, Geoff Clyde and John Murphy lost 2 down.

l The men’s team beat Greetham C 3½-2½.
