TWO Rutland Running Club members abstained from New Year’s Eve celebrations to be fit and ready for the New Year’s Day half marathon at Wicksteed Park, Kettering on Saturday.

Mark Coleman and Peter Golden, who both tackled the Rutland Water marathon in November, returned with a great start to 2011.

The three lap, undulating course followed the park perimeter with a short diversion into a nearby housing estate, before returning to the park.

With rain and cold hampering efforts, both Rutland runners did well and finished close to each other, Mark in 1hr 48min 27 and Peter finishing in 1h49m47.

For Mark it was a particularly good start to the year, knocking 11 minutes off his previous personal best for the distance set in December.

Earlier in the festive season the club held runs on Christmas Eve, around Hambleton Peninsula, and on Boxing Day around Eyebrook Reservoir.

The Hambleton race was held in memory of club member John Cheverton who died in 2010. Around 40 members, friends and family raised more than £60 for charity.

New runners of all abilities are always welcome at Rutland Running Club.
