OAKHAM’s Matt Gregory netted a superb brace of brown trout to land the biggest fish of the week at Rutland Water last Saturday.
Both his catches fell to dry fly in the evening and weighed in at 5lb 10oz and 4lb 12oz respectively.
Overall bank anglers have fared best in the late evening with fish targeting the last of the sedge and the buzzers coming off.
Boat anglers have fished reasonably well but the recent hot weather, more suited to the Mediterranean, made fishing rather testing. The shorter, cooler October days should see some of the biggest fish in the reservoir on the feed. Anglers have found the bigger fish around the many weed beds scattered around the shoreline.
l ANGLERS from all over the Europe have been competing in the Anglian Water Airflo International final on Tuesday and Wednesday. See next week’s edition for full results.
l ANGLERS still have time to enter the George Moore Memorial Trophy pairs rudder match on October 22. Call the fishing lodge on 01780 686441 for details.
l BANK anglers had most success with dries, nymphs and fry patterns this week with boat anglers also taking good catches with blobs, cormorants, boobies, gold/silver sparklers.
l MIDWEEK predator days continue at the reservoir with boat fishing for pike and zander with lures and dead sea bait over 18cm. A pike fishing course takes place on November 6.
