The Oaks have done just enough to secure their place in the play-offs for a place in the Midlands 1 East division next season.

Oakham lost 16-11 at Belgrave on Saturday but thanks to results elsewhere finished second in the Midland East 2 (North) two points clear of Nuneaton Old Edwardians to secure second place .

Their opponents in the play-off are likely to be Huntingdon, who currently lead Bugbrooke but have played a game more than their rivals. The deciding match in their division is due to be played on Saturday.

Oakham coach Tom Armstrong said: “We have few things to work on and the lads will be well drilled. If we play to our best there is no reason why we cannot win.”

Mark Matthews’ kicks and a late try from Ben Harries secured a bonus point at Belgrave.

Armstrong added: “This is the highest that we have ever finished.”
