OAKHAM RFC U13s returned from the Harrogate Festival as winners of the tournament Plate.
The squad of 21 faced teams including Rosslyn Park, Saffron Walden and Glossop, and the young Oaks were drawn in a tough pool stage.
Up against the hosts in their opening game, the Oakham boys came out second best. They then faced Yorkshire side Old Rishworthians, who went on to win the U13 Cup, beating a very good side from Rosslyn Park in the final.
Oakham’s forwards held their own against the Rishworthians but the opposition backs were too quick for the Oakham boys, who then faced Glossop in the Plate Final.
Glossop had three players, including a centre, who were bigger than the Oakham coaches, and the match was a spirited affair from the start, with both sides tackling well.
Oakham’s inside centre Don Butchart finally broke through to score under the posts and duly converted his own try. Glossop came back with a try of their own just before half-time, but missed the conversion, leaving Oakham 7–5 ahead.
In the second-half Glossop hurled everything at the Oaks, but all attacks were repelled and, with a minute to go, second-row Harry Glover ran through from the half-way line to score. Butchart again converted and the referee blew for the end of the match, with Oakham 14-5 winners.
Oakham were presented with their Plate Winners’ medals by the president of Harrogate RFC.
