IN one of the closest end-of-season chases for the title in many years, Oakham Squash Club failed by one game to retain their championship title.
Despite winning their final match against Spalding 2nd, Oakham fell agonisingly short on Monday.
Continuing a recent run of poor form, fifth seed Simon Stockton was beaten by an older, heavier opponent. Stockton’s shots crashed into the tin and lost without winning the crucial game that ultimately made the difference.
Steve Lockwood restored some pride with a convincing 3-1 victory at seed four. In full control from the start, Lockwood pulled his opponent to all corners of the court in a display that ranks as one of the finest of the season.
At seed three, Justin Fowler carried on from last week with an easy 3-0 victory. Fowler will win the award for covering the most mileage on court over the season; a straight line is anathema to this complicated athlete.
At second seed, Richard Woolveridge made heavy work of his 3-1 win before Justin Boughey wrapped it all up in style, demolishing Mark Smith in the top seed contest 3-0. But even that convincing win could not prevent Oakham missing out on top spot by a single game.
