Oakham Tennis Club’s ladies have missed out on promotion by a whisker after rounding off their Leicestershire League season with a 6-3 victory against Oadby.
Skipper Debbie Powell led a somewhat re-arranged side from the front, winning all three doubles rubbers alongside Jackie Staines.
Jane Gilmore and Laura Reekie found the going and the heat tough to begin with, but eventually found their way past the home team’s young first pair in a tie-break which went to the Rutlanders 7-3.
Their experience proved valuable in the two following rubbers which they won comfortably.
Michelle Greening and Pauline Pitts, also playing together for the first time, almost pulled off a tie-break win but were unlucky to lose a very close encounter. They fought all the way against the other three pairs but without luck.
The result leaves the ladies second in division 3 of the Leicestershire League, narrowly beaten for promotion by Melton’s Hamilton club who they had beaten twice this season.
l The ladies veterans continue their matches and scored a fine 5-4 win over Wigston.
Debbie Powell and Viki Renwick won all four sets - with some careful play and exciting rallies.
Muriel Smith and Pauline Pitts worked well together, forcing a tiebreak against one pair, then winning a set against the second visitor’s couple.
The Vets are sitting in the lower half of the Leicestershire League’s first division 1 - a tight competitive league - having won two and lost three. However they have top sides still to play from much larger clubs than Oakham.
