Rutland Ladies 9
Cambridge City 4th 3
LEAGUE leaders Rutland faced tough opposition in the form of a Cambridge side determined to attack from the off.
The City side tested Rutland with fast runs but the home side withstood this early pressure with Nicole Duffin making an excellent save before Rutland broke away to open the scoring.
Jennifer Pollock finished a fast counter attack and the goal changed the flow of the game with Rutland dominating and Pollock completing her hat-trick before half time. Her third came from an excellent solo run from a sideline ball.
The goals began to flow with Becky Wilson finishing off a short corner and Harriet Crennell also grabbing a hat-trick.
Sarah Sissins made vital interceptions and tackles, and quickly converted Rutland’s defensive play into attacks but as Rutland tired in the last 10 minutes, Cambridge capitalised to score three quick goals.
Rutland: Nicole Duffin, Kim Cooil, Aimee Blay, Sarah Sissins, Becky Wilson, Anne Pollock, Katie Richardson, Rachel Richardson, Jennifer Pollock, Harriet Crennell, Ella Bramachari.
Rutland Ladies 2nd 2
Newmarket 3rd 1
WITH several regulars missing on Saturday, Rutland called a couple of old pros out of retirement for Saturday’s match.
This meant there was plenty of nous in the front line but it was left to the younger legs to pick up the slack in the midfield. And they did this with gusto, cutting through the Newmarket backline and setting up numerous chances for the forwards.
Hatty Reilly in particular was full of running on Rutland’s left, and Charlie Gregg made several incisions from the right hand side.
Megan Wright eventually scored the home team’s opener, neatly finishing off a good team move.
Newmarket flickered on the break but Ellie Hemmings’ calm reading of the game more often than not stopped them in their tracks.
It was then a slight surprise when Newmarket equalised but for Rutland Nicole Eddy went close several times before debutante Jane King scored with a predator’s finish from close range.
