Oakham’s Gordon Reekie flew the flag for Rutland as Leicestershire’s Over 65s got their season off to a flying start.
The Leicestershire side, which featured Rutland’s Edmund Dry as reserve, beat Surrey 4-1 in the first division.
His team-mates included former UK number 1 and Davis Cup player Mark Cox, and Richard Tutt, the current British National Over 65s Champion.
Reekie, who is a former Veteran RAF singles and doubles champion, partnered former Oxfordshire County player Cliff Smith, winning one rubber and losing the second on a professional tie-break.
Under the captaincy of Reekie, the team has been promoted for three successive years from the lowest division to the top flight without losing a single rubber.
Their next match is at home to Middlesex this month with trips to Kent, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire to follow.
