RUTLAND beat West Bridgford Monarchs 5-1 in the Boys U18 National Cup competition on Sunday.
Right from the push-off, Rutland showed their skill, controlling the ball for more than 20 passes to go into the West Bridgford D and shoot narrowly wide without West Bridgford having touched the ball.
This pattern of play continued for the next 20 minutes as Rutland controlled and attacked but without the end product of a goal. Eventually Johnny Ashwin thumped home a short corner to put the home side ahead.
However, Monarchs executed a breakaway attack to penetrate Rutland’s D and slip the ball to an unmarked player in front of goal to equalise. They then fought hard to gain the lead but this gave Rutland more space to attack and David Booth was put through to regain the lead before half time.
In the second half Rutland developed one attack after another but could not find the net leaving the game in the balance.
Fortunately for Rutland, Steven Palmer eventually broke into the D after a fantastic solo run to lay the ball on for booth to score.
Booth scored his hat-trick soon after to make the game comfortable.Rutland wrapped the game up with a Patrick Conboy goal to round off a 5-1 victory.
