RUTLAND’s men’s 1st and 2nd teams meet tomorrow in a clash that could ultimately decide fate of the teams at the end of the season.
The 1st XI leads the Men’s East 3NW division but it is a tight affair with the 2nd XI only six points behind in fifth – and both sides showed form in big victories last weekend. The 1st XI thrashed Horncastle 9-2 while the 2nds hammered St Neots 7-0. That kind of form suggests a high-scoring encounter at Uppingham tomorrow.
Scott Perry scored a hat-trick for the 1sts but it was Ollie Browne who opened the scoring after a neat one-two with Pete Comben.
Browne was on fire, adding a second within minutes and then Perry scored his first with a well taken penalty corner drag flick.
In defence Jonny Ashwin and Owen Evans provided the solid foundation, which Rutland used to good effect, adding another three goals from Perry, Jordan Allen and Comben to put Rutland 6-0 ahead at half time.
Allen, Ben Harford and Perry, completing his hat trick, scored in the second half as Rutland conceded two unnecessary goals.
The 2nd string warmed up for Saturday’s derby with a comprehensive home win over St Neots 1sts.
It was a dominant performance with some attractive play that overwhelmed the visitors. The ball was switched from side to side, wearing down the opposition and after some early scares, Rutland eased to a 4-0 lead at half time.
Rutland scored three more goals in the second half.
Goalscorers were Alex Gamble, James Jarvis, Freddie Holland, Phil Ash whilst Gareth Clark weighed in with a hat-trick.
