Rutland riders were among the front-runners in the second round of the Northamptonshire Cycle Racing Association Early Spring Series on Saturday.

Velo Club Rutland hosted the race, which was run on the Middleton 10 mile circuit near Rockingham.

The handicap format of the races caters for various abilities of racers with riders set off in groups with 8 ½ minutes between the first and last groups.

As the three lap, 30 mile race progressed the groups merged with a couple from the scratch group (the final riders to start) catching the main field on the last lap which set up an exciting bunch sprint for the line.

Oakham’s Ryan Henry, riding for Rockingham Forest Wheelers, was in the scratch group and pulled back the 8 ½ minute handicap to win the race.

There were also excellent results for the VCR riders with Andy Hart in fourth, Amelia Cambridge eighth, and Ali Dickson 10th.

l Velo Club Rutland is holding its annual membership night at The Admiral Hornblower on March 21 from 7pm.

The evening is a great opportunity for new riders to find out more about the club.

Yearly subscriptions cost £15 for adults, £5 for U18s and £21 for families.

VCR rider Rebecca Cunnell said: “The club caters for all abilities of cyclist from novice recreational cyclists through to those who wish to race at national level.

“With our new Young Riders’ section, we can cater for all ages from 6 years upwards.”
