A young Rutland tennis star has earned a scholarship to a university in the United States to further develop her game.
Ana Webber, from Uppingham, has signed for a full athletics scholarship for the Women’s Tennis Team at Lee University, Tennessee, starting next Autumn.
Webber will study at Lee University for four years, majoring in exercise science while playing for the university women’s tennis team and touring the States with the team.
TS USA (Tennis Scholarships USA), run by Ralph Clarke and Claude Badowski, obtained several athletic scholarship offers for Webber, but having visited Lee University in the summer she decided that Lee would be the right university for her.
Webber has been at full time tennis academy for the past four years based at Nottingham Tennis Centre and Loughborough University.
For the past two years she has studied at Loughborough College while training full time with the Loughborough University Tennis Teams.
Unfortunately last year she slipped on court and damaged her knee, which resulted in a knee operation. However, she has now managed to come back from injury and has just started to compete again.
Webber’s first singles tournament following injury was at the end of October, when she played in the 18U National Tour in Bath. She made it through qualifying, taking out the number five seed, but then lost her initial match in the main draw, losing to the number two seed.
However she said it was a really pleasing result after a year of injury and recovery. Webber’s next competitive event, will be to represent Leicestershire in the Ladies County Cup which will take place at the end of November.
Webber started playing tennis at the age of eight years old at Oakham Tennis Club. She continues to play for Oakham when her schedule allows.
Ralph Clarke, from R2R Tennis that runs the coaching schedule at Oakham Tennis Club was her first coach, and he has kept in touch with Webber throughout her developing tennis career, and has now assisted her in securing her scholarship at Lee.
The scholarship provides funding for all fees and books, accommodation, food, training, kit and tournament travel and accommodation costs.
