Rutland Water seniors Bob Sachs and Richard Knight have reached the Leicestershire and Rutland Seniors County Foursomes final for the first time in the club’s history.
The duo have had a remarkable run of matches which began with a 4 & 3 defeat against defending champions Market Harborough.
In the quarter-finals a tight game saw the match go to extra holes away at Forest Hill GC, with the partnership holding their nerve to win on the fourth extra hole.
The semi-final was just as tense with the fearless pair battling back from a seemingly hopeless position of three down with three holes to play to take victory on the 19th.
The run is even more remarkable considering they have had to play every match away from home.
Bob said: “We’ve had some unbelievable matches this year and been fortunate to come out on the right side every time, I’m just hoping for one more good performance so we can win the trophy for the club.”
The final will be played against Scraptoft Seniors on the September 18 at a neutral venue.
* Caroline Butcher has won the ladies singles knockout after what was in her own words “one hell of a game” with close friend and club champion Liz Pengelly.
Caroline, who was receiving five shots, used them brilliantly on the front nine to establish a three up lead and by the time the match reached the 15th was four up, with four holes to play and only needed a single halve for victory.
However, with some great golf, Liz was able to win the last four holes and take the match to the 19th, only for Caroline to recompose herself to claim the title at the first extra hole.
* The mixed knockout competition was won by John Tilley and Christine Bodily at the weekend with victory over Paul Friend and Christine Friemuth. Paul and Christine were two up early on but a sublime tee shot to 3ft on the par three fourth by John kick started their round.
And with some steady golf the pairing ended up winning the match on the 16th.
