Two of Oakham School’s rising stars on the hockey pitch received county awards this week.
Ollie Jacques and George Edwards were named players of the season by Leicestershire and Rutland County Hockey at U14 and U17 level respectively.
They were presented with their awards by International Hockey Federation umpire Hannah Sanders and David Cawthorne, chairman of Leicestershire and Rutland Schools and Youth Hockey.
Meanwhile 23 pupils from the school have been selected to train at the Nottingham Junior Regional Performance Centre after playing for Leicestershire in selection tournaments.
The school’s director of hockey, Ashley Denman said: “This is the largest number of pupils to be selected from Oakham to date.”
Players selected from the girls’ teams are Ellie Hunt, Liv Peacock, Phoebe Burrows, Jessie Dooley, Bella Roddis, Hannah Leach, Evie Drew, Rebekah Foster-Collier, Alice Huddlestone, Maddie Pugh and Katie Cooil.
Boys selected for Nottingham are Ollie Jacques, Nathaniel Taylor, Seb Davies, AJ Stanton, Thomas Schanschieff, Edward Tattersall, Mark Pollock, Tom Gorman, Cameron Down, George Edwards, Monty Fynn, Will Means.
The school currently has three players (Amelia Milton, Kathryn Lane and Monty Jefferson) training with England for the European U18 Championships which take place next month.
Former schoolgirl Caitlin Jeffries has been selected to be number one goalkeeper for England’s U21 side which will compete in Germany in August.
On top of the pupils’ success, teachers Ellie Watton, Katie Long and Maddie Hinch played against New Zealand in a recent test series at Bisham Abbey in preparation for the Investec World League hosted in London at the end of June.
