WITH just one round remaining, the Rutland County Golf Club Seniors Order of Merit has boiled up to a two-horse finish with and exciting finish on the cards.

Favourite Fred Shorrock had come from nowhere to climb to second spot following a win and two second places in the last five rounds.

Current leader Alan Bainbridge, on 47 points, has not figured at all in those five events and has seen his lead whittled away to just five points.

l WILLIE Keatings mastered the difficult conditions and shoot net 67 in the October Midweek Medal. Playing off 14, Willie edged out second–placed Jordan Paylor by three shots. Darren Child was lowest gross on 77.

Also this week, serial winners Andy Vernon and Pete Siciliano cruised to victory in the Foursomes Cup on a net 67, four shots ahead of the young combination of Ollie Huxley and Josh Paylor. Andy Lawrence and Karen Palmer were third on net 72.

Graham Cole and Alan Shuttleworth dovetailed nicely to beat Jock Wallace and Dave Lynas in the Seniors Doubles Final by the narrowest of margins 1-up.

Meanwhile former club champion Neil Armstrong struck a hole-in-one while playing for Leicestershire Seniors at Droitwich Golf Club.

His perfect shot came on the 168-yard 11th hole using an 8-iron. His side won the match against Worcestershire, their final tie of the season, 4-3.

In the ladies competitions, Heather Knapp and Margaret Rippin won the Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier with a score of 37.

l RUTLAND County’s mixed team enjoyed a 5½ to 1½ win against Thorney Lakes.
