Stamford launch late promotion bid

STAMFORD’S over 60s bowlers are making a late bid for promotion from the Second Division of the Lincolnshire Over 60s League with a 102-95 win at Long Sutton and secured 12 vital points.

Overall scores were rarely more than two apart at any stage so the last end was crucial as the balance tilted Stamford’s way

Keith Rippin’s quartet drew the tricky rink one but mastered it to run out winners by nine shots, while John Geary’s four won by 16 combining to cover the other three rink defeats.

The team is now six points short of second placed Sleaford whom they visit next week opening the chance to put pressure on league leaders Dunholme who must still travel to Stamford.

l STAMFORD’S Mixed team suffered a setback in its bid to gain promotion from the second division, beaten overall by two shots at Lincoln B, despite winning on three rinks.

However, the team still leads the table by 14 points and visits third-placed Louth A tomorrow.

l IN the English National Over 60s pairs championship, Bob Warters and Martyn Dolby have reached the Area finals for the second successive year, beating Stamford rivals Mike Ramsden and Keith Rippin 19-8.

The pair, who went on to reach the national quarter-finals at Melton Mowbray last year, will meet Boston veteran Mick Tomlin and his partner at Spalding on Sunday at 5.30pm.

Dolby’s quartet in the county rinks (with Adam Warrington, Derek King and Wayne Morris) demolished Long Sutton and now face Spalding A in the quarter-finals.

l THE Stamford Club’s Open Day attracted an encouraging number of new bowlers to try their hand at the sport.

Saturday coaching (9.30am to midday) continues each week with more newcomers welcome.
