Teenage golf star Hugo Kedzlie immediately set his sights on qualifying for next year’s event after becoming the youngest player ever to compete in the finals of the Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship at Quinta do Lago in Portugal.

The Stamford School pupil, who plays his golf at Spalding Golf Club and only turned 14 at the end of last month, faced some of the UK’s top up-and-coming stars and returned rounds of 72, 80 and 79 to finish in eighth place in the boys’ event.

The reigning Lincolnshire boys’ under-14 and 16 champion’s final total of 231 was 25 strokes adrift of the winner.

Kedzlie said: “I have really enjoyed the whole experience. With the small field and the quality on show it has all been about how to manage yourself.

“Playing with them has been great to see how they use their shots and how they manage their minds. Playing on different grass has been an experience too. I really want to come back next year.”
