STAMFORD’S women bowlers have reached the last 16 in one of the top English competitions, the Yetton Plate.

Having already beaten local rivals Sleaford, they overwhelmed Leicester – a club with more than 1,000 members – with a comfortable 83-64 victory.

They now face Horncastle with two rinks at home and two away on January 20 for a place in the quarter-finals.

Rinks skipped by Peggy Birch and Glenys Edwards dominated the match against Leicester but great credit must go to the away victory by Pearl O’Brien’s rink, for whom lead Rose March was outstanding.

Edwards said: “This must be the furthest we have reached in this competition and we’re all delighted. To beat a club as big as Leicester is a great achievement.”

The women followed up their success with a comprehensive defeat of Skegness in the Trudy Bates County League by 147-65 in which Chris Ford’s rink top-scored with a 37-shot win.

In the Lincs Mixed League, Stamford lost their home clash with Boston, claiming only eight of the 18 points available, despite winning on all but one rink.

Stamford Men’s ‘B’ team took 12 points against Spalding B in a 10-shot triumph.

Martyn Dolby has reached two area finals in the National Over 60s competitions.

In the singles he beat clubmate Mike Ramsden 21-15 to set up a tilt at the national finals against Boston’s John Maury.

In the Over 60s pairs, partnering Bob Warters, he reached the area final with a 23-14 defeat of Maury and Colin Miller at Boston.
