An unprepared, Stoneygate arrived at Hinckley for a Veterans County Cup match on a cold December afternoon on Saturday after playing only one veterans fixture so far this season so it was no surprise when they went down 41-3 in a race loss.
It was clear from the kick off that Hinckley were a well drilled, experienced side who play regularly and are defending Vets cup champions for a reason.
Hinckley set a very high tempo from the outset and Gate were simply not ready for the onslaught, Hinckley quickly scored in the corner following some good offloading and recycling of the ball.
This sadly set the scene for much of the afternoon as Stoneygate were out muscled in the pack for much of the game.
They were unable to provide an experienced backline with any quality ball throughout the afternoon.
When Gate did have the ball, they made some in roads into the Hinckley 22, but these attacks came to nothing, and Stoneygate’s only points of the afternoon came from the boot of Ben Aspell with a solitary penalty.
Some committed tackling from all involved stopped a cricket score, but Gate were outclassed on the day by a deserving Hinckley side.
