A STUNNING start set Dave Thompson on the road to victory in Greetham Valley Golf Club’s 0 to 18 handicap two day Club Championship last weekend.
More than 100 players entered the tournament, which is held over two days with Saturday a qualifier for Sunday. Scores had to be within 10 shots of the leader to make the cut.
Many of the players struggled in stormy conditions but there were some who revelled in the rain and one of these was 5 handicapper Thompson.
After the front nine, he was one under gross having birdied the second and the eighth. He had a small hiccup on the ninth where he dropped his first shot but he recovered and played par golf to come home with a brilliant 71 to take the lowest gross of the day.
On Sunday, he began with a two shot advantage over Jordan Burdall and three over Tony Mould, and he switched his game plan from outright attack to play safe. Sam Sharpe, who had a 77 on the Saturday, played the round of the day on day two with the lowest gross (a fantastic 74) and took second overall with a total of 151.
Jordan struggled to repeat his form from the previous day and came home with a gross 80 but still finished in third with a total of 153.
But the day belonged to Thompson, pictured, who shot a gross 77 to win by three shots with a total of 148.
