RUTLAND Water is buzzing at the start of the season with many limits being taken.

With the unseasonably warm weather, insect hatches have been tremendous with buzzer catches of all sizes every day, and good numbers of over-wintered fish showing excellent condition.

The best fish of the week was a 6lb 7¾oz brown falling to Douglas Oldfield, who fished a booby blob on a Di5 while boat fishing.

Sixty-five anglers fished the Alan West Memorial Trophy - the first match of the 2011 season at Rutland Water on Friday.

Graham Pearson, of Houghton-on-the-Hill won by a comfortable margin, weighing in eight fish for an impressive 24lb 12oz. Graham fished the top of the North Arm with a midge tip and three black epoxy buzzers with a slow retrieve working well. Anglers achieved a rod average of 6.6 in this match.

Results: 1st Graham Pearson 8 fish for 24lb 12oz, 2nd Lindsay Barrie 8 for 20lb 12oz, 3rd John Hood 8 for 19lb 14oz, 4th Jock Kettles 8 for 19lb 10oz, 5th Sam Edmunds 8 for 19lb 0oz.
