The Ketco Cup and Championships where decided this week in the Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League.

The Division One championships took place at Jack Hunt School and the honours were shared between players.

In the singles competition, Julian Tee and Steven Gray fought out a final of quick-fire attack and counter-attack.

Julian won the first game 13-11, having been 10-7 down, and this seemed to affect Steven’s confidence. Although Steven won the third leg comfortably, Julian closed out the fourth end for victory.

In the doubles, both singles’ finalists were beaten in the semis.

In the final, Stephen Williams and Miroslav Vala played with consistency and flair to defeat Stamford School’s established doubles pairing of Leigh Ware and Richard Henry.

With this result, Stephen and Miro become the first winners of the MTTG trophy for this competition.

The Division Two championships took place at Northborough Village Hall.

Again, the Eastfield club enjoyed success with Martin Paluga victorious in the singles by defeating Tallington A’s Paul Ramm in three sets. Martin was then joined by Marek Betlej to make it a double in the doubles, overcoming David Webb and Paul Gibson in the final.

In Division One, Hampton experienced a mixed week. They enjoyed a 7-3 victory over Braunston ‘A’, with Dave Rowell unbeaten and Rod Hatton and Simon Le Provost two-time winners; but they lost 4-6 to Eastfield ‘A’, for whom Daniel Fielding again won three times.

Dave Rowell won twice – as did Shaun Murray for Eastfield – but the result just about ends Hampton’s chances of a top-two finish. Eastfield ‘A’, however, require just three points from their remaining match to retain their title.

The two other contenders for the title met at MTTG.

Eastfield ‘B’ secured a 6-4 win, largely thanks to Adam Jepson’s full-house. Miroslav Vala also won twice for the visitors which meant that Andy Goodacre’s double proved mere consolation on the night.
