YOUNG Graham Haywood, who has recently been selected to join the England Youth Flyfishing team for 2013, won week seven of Rutland Water’s Tuesday Night Boat League.
The 13-year-old from Empingham caught four fish for 11lb 6oz including the best fish of the night, a 4lb 8oz rainbow, to win by a wide margin.
Results: 1st Graham Hayward, 4 for 11lb 6oz; 2nd Geoff Wanless, 3 for 6lb 9oz; 3rd Ady Naylor 3 for 6lb 5½oz.
The popular league is now at the halfway stage with Keith Jones leading.
Top six: 1st Keith Jones 32 points; 2nd Ady Naylor 30; 3rd Geoff Wanless 30; 4th Richard Cooper 27; 5th Mick Bennett 17; 6th Toff Crowther 15.
l JUNE’S frustrating wet, windy weather has driven most boat anglers to fish in the main basin but that didn’t stop Keith Jones from Northborough near Peterborough catching the best fish of the week.
Keith, who was boat fishing the South Arm, took a cracking 7lb 7oz brown with a humungus lure on a Di5 line. The best rainbow of the week fell to B Williams of Gwent who took a superb 6lb 2oz fish.
Bank anglers have been taking fish off the Normanton Bank, especially last Thursday evening when fish were moving and caught on dry fly.
l FIVE teams of six fished the Midlands heat of the Anglian Water Airflo International at Rutland Water last week with three places at the Midlands final at Grafham Water in July up for grabs.
Peter Mitchell of winning team Greenwell Persuaders A caught the best fish at 4lb 13oz. The best bag weighed in at 21lb 14 5/8oz for Andy Jones of third-placed FWTFA.
Greenwell Persauders A, Seighford Sharks and FWTFA go through to the Midlands final.
l SIX pairs boat-fished the Rutland Water Flyfishers Hanby Cup.
Results: 1st Graham Pearson & Al Owen 16 fish for 43lb; 2nd Peter de Kremer & John Lee 16 for 39lb; 3rd Malcolm March & Hilary Tomlinson 16 for 32lb.
l MID-WEEK boat winner was Mick Bennett of Ridlington.
l Forthcoming events include a beginners course on Saturday, and the second leg of the Mid-summer Rudder Match on Sunday. Anglian Water’s Over 50s match takes place on July 21 with the Rutland Water Flyfishers Youth Flyfishing Day a day later.
Oakham Angling Club
MORE than 850lbs of fish were brought to the scales during Oakham Anglng Club’s match at Decoy Lakes Whittlesey on Sunday.
It was a good close fought match but out in front, off peg 20, was Dave Thornton who weighed in 94lb 08oz of carp caught on his favourite pole and pellet method.
Second, off peg 5, was Bob Macbeath who caught the majority of his fish on meat on the feeder. In third, beating Alan Wiggins by just 1oz, was Phil Stubley who weighed in 69lb 10oz of pole caught carp.
The club’s match on Oakham canal was won by veteran Cheesey Wardle and the club thanked Langham’s Wheatsheaf for a superb buffet after the match.
