BOURNE Tennis Club junior Tom Cooke won his first official LTA event last week, storming to victory in the Restricted 16&Under Boys’ Singles at the prestigious Grantham Open.
Seeded second for the event, Tom was given a bye straight through to the semi-finals, but a mix-up in the draw also sent his opponent, Ryan Moore of Grantham, through as well. Nonetheless, Moore was unable to live with Tom’s pace and intensity and it turned out to be a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 victory for the Bourne player.
In the final, Tom was pitted against Lawrence Rowland, another Grantham player, who had not dropped a set en route to that stage and had sent out a message by defeating the top seed 6-2, 7-5 in the first round.
However, Tom never looked fazed and his big serving and consistency sealed a 6-3, 6-1 win to take his first title away from his home club.
Tom’s victory in the event, which is competed for by those who were not accepted into the main draw of the tournament, was the highlight of Bourne’s involvement in the week-long Grantham Open, which attracted two players ranked top nationally for their respective age groups.
There were also promising displays from Matt Hassall in the main draw of two other events, and from Tom and Matt together when they almost caused a shock against higher-ranked opposition in the 18&Under Boys’ Doubles, going down 4-6, 4-6 in the round of 16.
