RUTLAND County’s Senior Open Winter Series kicked off in unseasonably hot weather and the early starters made best use of the calm conditions.

Seniors from around the region entered the first of five monthly open events and Stoke Rochford’s Terry Garland laid an early marker, scoring 39 points to edge County’s Keith Barratt on 38.

Birstall’s Mike Potter was third with 38 points on countback. The next round is on November 7 and all senior golfers are welcome.

l DEGGIE Palmer roughed up Club Champion Ollie Freckingham in the final of the Scratch Knockout Cup coming back from two down, two to play to win the first extra hole.

Freckingham bogied the 17th and 18th, Palmer stiffed his approach shot on the 19th and the celebrations began.

A similarly tight finish saw Pete Siciliano defeat Martin Clark 1 up in the final of the Summer Singles. Clark came back from three down to be just 1 behind on the 12th but wily campaigner Siciliano kept his head to hold on to the end.

l HEATHER Knapp is enjoying a rich vein of form.

Her 41 points earned her top spot in the Ladies Autumn meeting ahead of Jenny Cobb’s 39 points with third placed Karen Palmer scoring 38 points.

Anne Shuttleworth’s power saw her take longest drive on the 8th, Imogen Huxley was longest on the 16th. Huxley was also nearest the pin on the 4th and Ann Burnett closest on the 17th.
